Checking off a list

Burned frame on the beginning of a roll of HP5. All pics on this blog will have been shot in Seoul, South Korea; scanned/developed at Gorae Photo Lab in Seoul, South Korea.

Fun fact about me: I am (probably) afraid of heights. But that doesn’t stop me from wanting to go to every building on the list of “tallest freestanding structures in the world”. I had already been to the Burj Khalifa, and next (and most readily available) on the list was Seoul’s Lotte Tower. Toward the end of the school year, I decided to take a Saturday trip to visit it. I had just purchased a Canon AE-1 Program to accompany my A-1 (and be able to simultaneously shoot color and b/w) and wanted to also use the 70-210mm telephoto lens I’d bought. Put another way- I had a reason to make something special out of the day.

All color images on this blog were shot on Kodak Portra 160 from Seoul’s Lotte Tower

The streets/shops/subways of Seoul were endlessly fascinating to me.

All black and white images on this blog were shot on Ilford HP5 400

But as I’ve also talked about, playing with light as it interacts with film had become an endless fascination as well. And sometimes journeys through the streets also helped force me play with what I saw as it came into my camera.

How many buildings did I take pictures of in Seoul?

How many frames were ‘wasted’? None. Or all. No in between.

The whole day was not entirely spent on the top of Lotte Tower- part of the adventure was, as usual, spent in the shops and the malls around the tower itself.

Some blogs are ones that require/demand stories. And some are just “I was here on this day and here are the photos I took. Enjoy if you will.” This is the latter. Until next time!

Wrapping-up thoughts:

  • If you’re in the PNW, Union Arts Center is doing Macbeth for their Shakespeare in the Park. See it. I did! It was amazing.

  • Speaking of “things to see”, by the time this blog is published I’ll have seen the Odyssey. I can’t wait!

  • I need to shoot more film this summer that I’m capable of posting. It’s been a very ‘analog and self-dev’ kinda summer thus far. At least I can make prints?
